Caribbean Counterpoint:
Two Cities in the Archipelago
Photographs of Havana and Port of Spain by Nancy Stout
Caribbean Counterpoint has been curated by Maria Friedrich for InterAmericas/Society
of Arts and Letters of the Americas/Sociedad de Artes y Letras de las Américas,
a program of the New York Foundation for the Arts. The exhibition integrates
two complementary groups of architectural photographs by Nancy Stout: the first
selection, commissioned by InterAmericas in 1999, relates to Trinidad; the second
is a series of toned silver gelatin prints from Stouts publication Havana/La
Habana (Rizzoli International Publications, Inc., 1994).
The images of Trinidad in Caribbean Counterpoint are also the subject of Volume
I of 12/12, a twelve-volume series of portfolios of twelve iris prints, printed
in celebration of the tenth anniversary in 2002 of the founding of InterAmericas.
InterAmericas® is a registered mark of The Reed Foundation, which has funded
the creation of the InterAmericas Space within CCA7, in memory of Sybil Atteck
(1911-1975), Vera Rubin (1911-1985) and Beryl McBurnie (1913- 2000). The InterAmericas
space will serve as a venue for programmes that celebrate the richness and diversity
of the arts and humanities of the Caribbean.
Nancy Stout is the author and photographer of Great American Thoroughbred Racetracks,
photographer of Havana/La Habana and author and photographer of Habanos: The
Story of the Cuban Cigar, all published by Rizzoli.
John A. Loomis, Chair of Architecture at the California College of Arts and
Crafts, is an architect and historian. He is the author of Revolution of Forms:
Cubas Forgotten Art Schools (Princeton Architectural Press, 1999) and
an essay in the catalogue for Caribbean Counterpoint. Images from Revolution
of Forms will appear in a forthcoming Volume of 12/12.
Caribbean Counterpoint: Two Cities in the Archipelago
was displayed in the InterAmericas Space at CCA7 from
June 29th to August 12th, 2000.
