"First Cut"

In association with the University of the West Indies CCA presents: "First Cut" a showcase of short films by third year students who took part in a Film & Video workshop lead by Bruce Paddington and Robert Yao Ramesar.

"First Cut" opens on Tuesday 26th March, 2002 from 6.30 – 8.30pm.

Bruce Paddington is amazed with the results of his video workshop at the Centre for Creative & Festival Arts, UWI. The 6-week workshop is exactly that, students learning to use the camera, direct and edit their own production in 6 weeks. It is the first cuts of this intensive crash course that will be shown in the InterAmericas Space at CCA7, a Centre for the Contemporary Arts, opening on Tuesday 26th March 2002 at 6.30pm.

This showcase of 9 short films was produced by final year students of the film and video workshop at the university. Work featured will be by Dominique Chung, Kim Henry, Jaime Lee Loy, Delthia Naitram, Michael Norgriff, Marsha Pearce, Patrick Roberts, Nicole Simonette and Robert Wallace. Chung’s video has been described as ‘incredible, with the music of Nine Inch nails in the background’. Pearce has been complimented on the way she used a young black child in a tender manner, and not as a typical use in the illustration of poverty. Roberts’ film deals with an artist doing a self-portrait and not pleased with what he sees in it.

Paddington, a founder of Banyan, remarked that it is important to encourage students in this field, and for them to get their work see. He says it is a great confidence booster to see your work shown and has high hopes that the students will continue after they graduate. Unfortunately, since the programme got underway, no student has continued to do film after completing their studies.

Also on display are photographs from a Photography 6-week workshop. Work on display will be from Stacy des Vignes, Johanna Fullerton, Jessie-Ann Jessamy, Jaime Lee Loy, Rickson McDonald, Marsha Pearce, Vienna Poliah, Lisa-Marie Stewart, Robert Wallace and Keith Ward.

‘First Cut’ was part of CCA’s continuous programme of exhibitions in the InterAmericas Space at CCA7 from March 26th to 13th April 2002.
