Mud Sculptures

Art Camp: Earth and Body is the name of the series of workshops for children that took place at from 13th - 24th August 2001. The public, family and friends were invited to view work of the young artists at CCA7 on Saturday 25th August from 1pm to 5 pm. All were welcome and the event was free.

Work made at the Art Camp: Earth and Body were exhibited in The InterAmericas Space at CCA7 from Tuesday 25th August - Saturday 1st September 2001.

Art Camp: Earth and Body highlights the artistic energy from the workshops that the children participated in. Children from ages 7 to 19, took part each day in a different project. The groups were divided into two age groups, 12 and under and 13 - 19. Both the younger and older groups did murals assisted and facilitated by artist Elsa Clarke, who has a background in arts education. Emilia Azcárate, currently exhibiting recent work at CCA7, had the younger children involved in making sculptures with mud. Naimi Ali, who teaches drama and theatre, worked on a variety of projects with the younger group, which usually ended up with dance. Chris Cozier also used music for his workshop with the older group, as he changed their listening material, and watched they change what and how they drew in response to the music they heard. John Stollmeyer also held a few workshops with the older participants, teaching them how to work with shape and form. His workshop culminated in a series of paper masks, while Susie Dayal taught drawing about the body, and understanding the movement of the human form as a starting point for costume making. There were other workshops such as dance with Dave Williams and designing and making jewellery from local material with Lupe Leonard, and Nina Katchadourian, an artist on residence, taught the younger group how to make shadow puppets.
